Internet Addiction

What is Internet addiction?

Internet addiction is described as an impulse control disorder, which does not involve use of an intoxicating drug and is very similar to pathological gambling.

  •   Internet users may enjoy using social networking websites to develop their relationship.
  •   Other Internet users spend endless hours researching topics of interest Online or "blogging".
Similar to other addictions, those suffering from Internet addiction use the virtual fantasy world to connect with real people through the Internet, as a substitution for real-life human connection, which they are unable to achieve normally.

Without internet, i really will feel very empty. However just now i do the test that is provided above, i was just a average person. surprisingly~~
I think internet addiction is ok as long you are in control of it~~ Because i feel i am a internet addiction, i have no views of it~~

  2. I am sure many will be shocked by the results they get from doing the internet addiction test.

You cover some useful points. Do share some speific case studies and examples.

There are some points that are repeated, eg the effects of the addiction. You also need to be more original and should not lift from the other sites.

  3. hi chenjie!

I think many of us are internet addicts without even realising. Most of us spend more than half our time online doing work or studying and we never actually realise that it has impacted our life.

I feel very insecure if I did not go online to check my mails, blog and twitter page. I feel the need switch on my laptop and stay connected to the world.

  4. Hey chenjie!

I agree with Shermeen's comment about many of us being internet addicts without realising it. I think what is important is also to what degree is one's addiction!

  5. I took the test and thank goodness I belong to the average range! It says that "You may surf the Web a bit too long at times, but you have control over your usage." and I do agree with it. Like Shermeen, I also do check my email, twitter and facebook almost everyday (I mean that's what most of us were up to right?) Sometimes when I do not switch on the computer, I would still sign in to my msn on my phone. I just feel that there's a need to.

I have no difficulty leaving the computer but now that i think about it, maybe it's because i have my phone!

  8. To be honest, I used to be on the internet for up to 12 hours a day, and I had to surf at least once a day. Heck, I even brought my laptop on overseas trips!

But now I'm much less reliant on the internet, and life without it actually seems pretty pleasant. I've tried deactivating my facebook/twitter accounts with much success, and now the only thing keeping me up at night is the browsing of forums and funny websites (like Cracked.com).

  9. i think that the number of people getting hook to internet is increasing. for example, people nowadays do not just use internet in offices, house but also on new technology like ipad, blackberrys and other smart phone.it is like a daily dosage which one would feel uncomfortable if they dont get it.

  10. I got an above average score! That's a fun test but however I feel that I more towards gaming addiction rather than internet addiction.

Internet users has been increasing especially with the surge of new media stuffs like that. Agree with what keith said about new technology which has successfully help decrease the downtime of an internet user by a tremendous amount. Therefore, i feel that internet addicts are becoming more rampant in that sense.

  11. To me I feel that we can no longer measure internet addiction based on the amount of hours spent on the internet because it has become more of a way of life. It should be looked at if the person is controlled into sorting his schedule and hours around the net.

For example, if a guy wakes up and reads the news on his iPad and watches a tv-episode on youtube on the way to work. When he reaches work he checks his emails and communicates with collegues and friends through chat and face-time. On his way home, he watches another tv-episode and when he gets home, he plays some internet games to relax.

The person has been on the internet for the whole day, but I wouldn't count him as addicted. After all the internet has become a way of life. That's just my opinion though. :)

  12. hmmm... i'm an average, for me i know when to stop myself from coming online or even using the computer. Often when exams are around the corner i will not turn my computer on at all, unless i want to log on to OLIVE to find past year papers or lecture notes.

Only reasons i come online is to find a source of entertainment such as watching dramas online, other than that i do not do much online.

  13. Hello!

I think I'm an internet addict when it comes to shopping online. But when it comes to other activities such as facebook, youtube, it's kinda ridiculous?
But internet addiction is better than gaming addiction because internet expose you to more variety of stuff such as knowing the latest news, technology, trends and etc unlike gaming, it has no purpose other than violence or sense of accomplishment which you can never apply it to the real world.

In conclusion, addiction to internet should be minimized due to the negative effects that it can cause to our health.

  14. I think it is safe to say that most teenagers are internet addicts in recent years because of the easy accessibility and the vast amount of things that can be done online. It can be both positive and negative, but I'm leaning more towards the postive side because it is really a convenience in my opinion.

Instead of watching shows on tv I can do so online. I no longer need to queue up at banks as I can conduct transactions online. I will receive email reminders if my library books are about due.. These are just some of the examples why I think internet addiction can be tolerated to a certain level.

  15. zheng yu here.

i think i have developed some of the internet addict symptoms, but i do not consider myself a internet addict yet. maybe close but not yet an addict.

with internet all around us nowadays, on phones, mp3 players, computer, its everywhere. we who are exposed and used to such environment will surely find it hard to not live without it.

  16. Internet has obviously taken up a huge part of our life.

I admit that I'm an addict because I can spend my whole night in front of the computer watching shows online and even shopping online.

Internet has also benefited us and brought convenience to us.

  17. i just did the test and got Average, a total of 44! wow and i thought i would be below average since i can live without facebook or twitter for more than a month. well maybe it's because i watch dramas online instead of using the television so i think it adds on to the amount of time spent online!

but all in all i do agree that more and more teenagers are spending more time on the internet than spending time with the people around them.

while it's partly our fault, it's not something easy for us to take control of. the Internet is everywhere. even in school we use the Internet to learn and get our resources. it's for us to game, do work, shop, watch television, connect with friends, keep our diaries, and almost anything else. it keeps our lives in order.

but for the rest who spend really too much time on the computer, they have to reflect on themselves and try to control it the next time
